Bedroom to Boardroom
For over 25 years, we have been driven by one simple idea: save people money while delivering world-class service. Ozaroo began when teenage brothers Chris and Conor Martin launched the online retail business from their bedroom. They chose the quirky name and built the company around a belief that still defines it today: actions speak louder than words.
That belief, combined with relentless hard work and a commitment to excellence, brought Ozaroo numerous awards and widespread recognition. For several consecutive years, respected organisations including Deloitte and the Financial Times recognised the company as one of the fastest-growing businesses.
Humble Beginnings
Chris’s entrepreneurial streak emerged early. Growing up in working-class Belfast, he was taking on part-time jobs and running a small shop from his school locker by the age of 11. A fascination with computers and the internet led him to sell games and hardware on eBay. He soon spotted an opportunity on the other side of the world: Australian customers could save money by ordering those products online from overseas.
With savings of a few thousand pounds, Chris began investing in ideas that could grow the business. He ran the limited company from his bedroom while studying at Queen’s University Belfast. The approach was simple: avoid extravagance and reinvest the profits in new brands, products, technology and ideas. As the business grew, Conor joined him to help meet the increasing demand.
“Hard work, honesty and frugality shaped us from the very beginning,” Chris said. “We grew up with very little, and our mum taught us to avoid debt at all costs. We carried those same values into Ozaroo—working hard, spending carefully and reinvesting in the business.”
The UK would later become Ozaroo’s largest market, but its earliest focus was Australia. The name was designed to stand out: ‘oz’ came from the abbreviation for Australia, while ‘aroo’ was inspired by the kangaroo, the country’s national symbol.
Growth & Sacrifice
Sales grew quickly, and so did the day-to-day demands, leaving the brothers little room for work-life balance. To help manage the workload, they asked their mum Brenda to leave her job and join the business. Careful about taking on overheads, they hesitated before moving into a small unit in a nearby business park.
With no loans or grants, every stage of growth had to be funded from within the business. Finding enough space for the expanding product range became a constant challenge. After outgrowing their first five premises, the Martin brothers moved into a state-of-the-art distribution centre, creating numerous job opportunities in County Antrim.
“Looking back, it still feels surreal to support so many local people while serving millions of customers,” Chris said. “It’s a genuine win-win for everyone involved.”
What began in a school locker and a bedroom grew far beyond anything the brothers had imagined. Through it all, Ozaroo stayed true to the belief that shaped the business from the start: actions speak louder than words.
