What is the John Innes recipe?
John Innes Composts are a traditional recipe of 5 ingredients all with their own unique growing benefits. Developed in the 1930’s, this traditional recipe has been used by gardeners with great success for over 80 years.
Loam - For efficient nutrient management
Peat - Retains and releases water when needed
Grit - For excellent drainage
Lime - For optimum pH
Nutrients - For establishment and strong, healthy growth
Who was John Innes?
John Innes was not a horticulturist, in fact he was a wealthy philanthropist who bequeathed funds and his home in 1904 to be used as a facility to research and develop growing mediums for growing seeds and plants.
In the 1930s two research workers, William Lawrence and John Newell, developed a formulation that changed gardening forever with a formulation that provided consistently reliable growing results.
They introduced two standard composts, a seed sowing and potting. These ‘John Innes’ composts revolutionised the way composts were produced and are still produced to this very recipe today.
